During the earlier times, the extraction of oil was done by crushing the oil seeds with the use of stone grinders and other mills. Now oil expelling / extraction is done by making use of oil extraction machinery, which is known as oil expeller or screw press. They can be further categorized into pre press expeller, full press expeller, and cold screw press.

Oil expelling with certain oil extraction machienry is a mechanical method that is used to extract oil from oil seeds like sunflower seeds, peanut, soya bean seed, rape seeds, mustard seeds, castor seeds, copra, cotton seeds etc. All oil seeds contain some amount of oil themselves which varies from 20% to 60%. In order to extract the oil from them, the oil seeds have to be crushed or squeezed under a high pressure in one step. As the seeds are pressed, it produces a friction, which causes seeds to heat up. As the heat of the expellers increase, the yield of the extracted oil also increases.
